A film about Kamp Rees
A short documentary film inspired by Verbroken Stilte: Verhalen over Kamp Rees by Sander Bosma. Created as a visual companion to the book, the film translates its historical subject into moving images for presentations, education and cultural settings, while treating the people and events connected to Kamp Rees with care and restraint.
The film
The film was created entirely as a constructed visual production. No live-action footage was shot for the project. Scenes were developed through AI-assisted image generation, then selected, refined and assembled manually through editing, sound design and colour grading. The result is a vertical documentary designed for digital viewing, presentations and cultural or educational contexts.
Purpose
The project began with a simple purpose: to give the history presented in Verbroken Stilte a visual form without turning historical suffering into spectacle. The film was created to:

Structure
The visual approach was deliberately restrained.
The camera stays close to people, objects and physical details rather than relying on spectacle.
Objects, empty spaces, clothing, hands, doors, roads and landscapes are used to carry meaning without unnecessary explanation.
Frames remain simple and readable so that visual complexity never overwhelms the subject.
Light, shadow and atmosphere were developed to feel physically grounded rather than stylised for dramatic effect.
AI-generated imagery was treated as interpretation, not as historical evidence. The images are not presented as authentic archival photographs or documentary footage from Kamp Rees.
Characters, environments, lighting and visual texture were refined across sequences to create a coherent film rather than a collection of unrelated generated images.
How it was made
14 March – 2 April 2026The production combined historical research, visual development, AI-assisted image creation and traditional post-production. Every stage was reviewed manually.
Reading the source material and researching the historical context before visual development began.
Breaking the material into sequences and determining what should be shown directly, suggested symbolically or left unseen.
Planning the visual progression, framing and rhythm of each sequence.
Generating visual material with AI-assisted tools, followed by manual selection, refinement and continuity work.
Building atmosphere through sound design and music to support the images without overpowering them.
Shaping timing, transitions, visual continuity and colour into a complete narrative.
Preparing the final vertical 9:16 master for presentation, exhibition and online use.

The project was produced between 14 March and 2 April 2026.

This film is dedicated to the people connected to Kamp Rees whose experiences are remembered through this work.
It was created with respect for their memories and for the generations who continue to learn from them.
